A 21-year old Rutgers University college student from Flemington died this morning when his car crashed into a tree along Route 78 in Hunterdon County, New Jersey State Police said.

Mike P. Tucholski Jr. died instantly from traumatic injuries suffered in the one-vehicle crash that occurred at 9:11 a.m., and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Witnesses told police that Tucholski's westbound 1990 Nissan 300ZX two-door sports car had not been speeding, but left the road and hit a tree near mile marker 23 in Clinton Township, police said.

"Witnesses stated he was going at a normal speed on the highway, when he just drifted off the road and struck a tree," said New Jersey State Police spokesman Stephen Jones. "At this point, he either fell asleep or had some other problem."

An off-duty Maplewood fireman also stopped and put out a small engine fire, Jones said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The cause of death also is undetermined, pending an autopsy expected to be performed tomorrow by the Hunterdon County Medical Examiner's Office, police said.

Tucholski, who just turned 21 years old on Aug. 19, was single and a student at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, and had just moved into college for the fall semester, police said. He had been a standout pole vaulter at Hunterdon Central High School.
